– Background –

Michael Baurenfeind was a German calligrapher who lived from 1680 until 1753. He authored several books on calligraphy and was a well-respected calligrapher and notary based in Nuremberg. Baurenfeind is known for creating an alphabet named Neudoerffer Initialen in his opus titled Vollkommene Wieder-Herstellung, which was published in 1716 by Christoph Weigel in Nuremberg. Baurenfeind's work has had a lasting impact on typography – for example, Pia Frauss used it as the basis for her blackletter typeface called Love's Labour in 2007. He was the father of Georg Wilhelm Baurenfeind (1728–1763), who portrayed him in one of his works. His son followed in his artistic footsteps, training as an illustrator and specializing in botany, and even travelled to Arabia before tragically succumbing to Malaria on a ship near Bombay.
