– Background –

Gottfried Keller was a Swiss poet and politician, born in Zurich in 1819 and died in the same city in 1890. After being expelled from school for a prank in his youth, he pursued an education in landscape painting, spending two years studying in Munich. However, he discovered his talent for poetry while exposed to the political lyrics of the Vormärz movement. He participated in the militant movement that led to the reorganization of Switzerland in 1848. Later, he studied history and political science in Heidelberg and Berlin and began writing novels and novellas, including his most famous works, Der grüne Heinrich and Die Leute von Seldwyla. He became the First State Secretary of the Canton of Zurich in 1861, which he held for ten years, during which time he produced little new literary work. After retiring in 1876, he returned to writing, producing a series of new novellas, including Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe and Kleider machen Leute. Keller is regarded as one of the most important representatives of the bourgeois realism movement, and his poetry has inspired many musicians.
