– Background –Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) was a prolific Austrian writer, poet, painter, and pedagogue. He is known for his picturesque descriptions of natural landscapes in his writing and has been widely celebrated in the German-speaking world. Stifter had a troubled personal life, including a failed relationship and an unhappy marriage, as well as the tragic loss of a niece. Politically, he held strong liberal convictions and ran as a candidate in the Frankfurt Parliament. Stifter's philosophy was centered around the concept of Bildung [education], and he worked as a tutor to Vienna's aristocrats, which helped him make a living. Stifter's work is characterized by a pursuit of beauty and morality, often set in ideal worlds, and has been described as part of the Biedermeier movement in literature. His major works include the long novels Der Nachsommer and Witiko, with the former being considered one of the finest examples of the Bildungsroman. |
