– Background –

Hermann Ottomar Friedrich Goedsche, also known under his pseudonym Sir John Retcliffe, was a German writer who lived from 1815 or 1816 to 1878. He was born in Trachenberg and attended high school in Breslau, after which he worked as a post office secretary in various locations. In 1848 he became part of the editorial team of the Neue Preußische (Kreuz-)Zeitung and was in charge of the column "The Berlin Spectator", which defamed figures of the opposing political group. Retcliffe was a conservative and strongly opposed proponents of democracy. He worked as agent provocateur for the Prussian secret service and forged letters which were used as evidence to frame democratic leaders. As a writer, he authored historical-political novels from an extremely conservative point of view. His novels contained elements of sensationalism and were a combination of history and fiction. He enriched the genre of historical novels and was influenced by Walter Scott, Charles Sealsfield, and Theodor Mügge. He is known to have been part of the circle of Friedrich Wilhelm IV and had knowledge of internal affairs. His writing style presented the reader with a glimpse of the inner workings of world politics.
