– Background –

The Dresdner Geschichtsverein is a registered association that was founded in 1991 in Dresden, Germany. The association is focused on promoting interdisciplinary knowledge about the history of the Dresden region and publishes the quarterly journal, Dresdner Hefte. The association is a continuation of the 1869-founded "Verein für Geschichte und Topographie Dresdens und Umgebung" which was dissolved after World War II, and its members joined the newly formed cultural federation for the democratic renewal of Germany. The Dresdner Geschichtsverein is headquartered at the Stadtmuseum Dresden, and its members hold an annual general meeting to discuss the association's principles, plans, and financial reports. Hans-Peter Lühr, one of the founding members, served as the association's managing director for 25 years before being succeeded by Justus H. Ulbricht, and Caroline Förster is the current managing director since March 2021.
