– Background –

The Landesverein Sächsischer Heimatschutz was founded in 1908 by Karl Schmidt and Oskar Seyffert as a successor organization to the Committee for Native Nature, Art and Architecture. The association aimed to preserve the cultural heritage of Saxony and established the Saxon Museum of Folk Art in 1913. In 1921, the association established a research and recreational center near Oelsen, and it acquired several conservation areas by 1945. During the Nazi regime, the association was forced into the National Socialist Home Workers of Saxony, and its assets were confiscated in 1949. The organization was reestablished after the fall of the Berlin Wall and has since worked on preserving historical monuments and conservation areas in Saxony.
