– Background –August Köhler was a German kindergarten educator and successor of Friedrich Fröbel. Born in 1821, he grew up in modest circumstances, and despite his foster parents' threat to disinherit him, he became a teacher. After working at a school founded by Christian Salzmann, he moved to Gotha and became a devoted advocate of Fröbel's pedagogy, developing his own approach to kindergarten education. Köhler was a founder and chairman of the German Fröbel Association and played a key role in the development of the legal framework for kindergartens and the training of kindergarten teachers. He also campaigned for the adoption of Fröbel's ideas in Austria-Hungary and Russia. Köhler's innovative approach to the education of women was significant in the struggle for women's rights. |
