– Background –

Ernst Kreidolf was a Swiss painter and graphic artist born on February 9, 1863, in Bern. He was also a pioneer of the modern picture book. Kreidolf studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He mainly illustrated children's books, some of which he wrote himself, and his books were known for their depictions of flowers and animals. Kreidolf's artwork often featured personified butterflies and insects woven into dreamlike metamorphoses. He had to return to Switzerland during World War I, and he finally settled in Bern in 1918. Kreidolf was a frequent guest of Eduard Zimmermann, a friend he met at the Academy in Munich. Kreidolf died in Bern on August 12, 1956, and was buried in the Schosshalden Cemetery. The Burgerbibliothek Bern holds Kreidolf's estate, while his collection is now in the Kunstmuseum Bern through the Ernst Kreidolf Association.
