– Background –

Jean Baptiste Racine was a prominent author of French classical tragedy, born on December 22, 1639, in La Ferté-Milon, and died on April 21, 1699, in Paris. He is regarded as one of France's greatest tragedians, alongside or even ahead of Pierre Corneille. Racine's interest in drama began during his studies in Uzès, where he wrote a play based on the love and adventure novel "Ethiopica" by Heliodorus. After moving to Paris, he became friends with Nicolas Boileau and Molière, and his tragedy "La Thébaïde ou les frères ennemis" was performed by Molière's theater company. Racine's plays often featured nuanced depictions of love and its conflicts, and his work gained favor with the French court, leading to an increase in his pension and his association with Henriette d'Angleterre.
