– Background –

Walter Maria Kersting was a German architect, industrial designer, and professor of artistic and technical design in Cologne. He studied mechanical engineering at the TH Hannover and became a member of the German Werkbund in 1917. In 1924, he opened his own freelance studio in Hannover and in 1927, he became a professor of artistic and technical design at the Institute in Cologne. Kersting was responsible for designing the prototype of the Bakelite casing of the Volksempfänger VE 301 with his students, which became the most well-known design object of the Nazi era due to its unique shape and high production numbers. After a restructuring in 1933, he switched to the Art Academy in Düsseldorf as a graphic professor, but was retired by the Nazis in 1942. After World War II, he founded the Kersting model construction workshops in Waging, from which, among other things, the telephone for the Europe Series E with the first thermoplastic telephone housing emerged. Kersting is also known as a pioneer of the later popular model railway scale N with a ratio of 1:160 (except in the UK and Japan).
