– Background –

Wilhelm Schwaner was a German teacher, journalist, publisher, and prominent figure within the völkisch movement in the first half of the 20th century. He was the chairman of the Bund Deutscher Volkserzieher and the long-time editor-in-chief of the magazine Der Volkserzieher [The People's Educator]. Schwaner was born in Korbach, Waldeck in 1863, and began his career as a primary school teacher in Schweinsbühl in 1885. He later became a journalist and editor, working for the Kieler Neueste Nachrichten and Berliner Reform before founding Der Volkserzieher in 1897. Schwaner was also involved in the founding of the Freie Hochschule in Berlin-Friedrichshagen in 1902, but later withdrew due to political differences. This 1919 edition of the Volkserzieher, publishing sources of old Germanic writings and customs, still carries the Swastika as a symbol. It was abandoned after Schwaner's public commitment to the Weimar Republic in the Volkserzieher in 1926. Schwaner died at the age of 81 in Rattlar in 1944 and was buried in the local cemetery.
