– Background –

The Free German Youth (FDJ) was a communist youth organization that was recognized and supported by the government in East Germany. It was a mass organization that was part of a parallel education system to schools. The FDJ is a member of the World Federation of Democratic Youth and the International Union of Students. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany, the FDJ lost its political significance. The "FDJ in West Germany" was banned as an unconstitutional organization in 1954, while the FDJ operates legally in contemporary Germany. The FDJ was founded with the principle of parity between the communist and social democratic parties in the Soviet occupation zone. The KPD obtained political approval for the FDJ's creation in Moscow in February 1946. The founding of the FDJ was initially scheduled for February 24, 1946, but due to opposition from the churches, it was postponed to March 7, 1946.
