– Background –Elisabeth Senault was a calligrapher and engraver trained by her father, Louis Senault, a renowned French writing master and engraver. Following her father's death in approximately 1685, she created a number of private prayer books for the French royal court. These books were printed entirely with engraved plates, an effort to replicate the lavish ornamentation of illuminated manuscript prayer books. The Heures nouvelles on display was fashioned as an abbreviated "Book of Hours" with additional private prayers for various occasions, such as before and after confession. This and other similar editions were dedicated to Louis, le grand Dauphin, the 20th Dauphin of France (1661–1711). |
