– Background –The Pirckheimer Society is a group of book lovers, graphic art collectors, and ex-libris enthusiasts. It was named after Willibald Pirckheimer, the founder of bibliophilia, a Renaissance scholar, and a humanist. The society aims to make its members and the public familiar with works of book art and graphics, support and promote the collection of beautiful and valuable books, graphics, and ex-libris, contribute to the development of graphic arts, and maintain ex-libris. It was founded on January 29, 1956, in Berlin, and was a part of the Cultural Association of the GDR until its dissolution. The society is the youngest of the three bibliophile associations (Maximilian Society, Society of Bibliophiles) that are active throughout Germany. The Pirckheimer Society publishes a quarterly magazine called "MARGINALIEN," which is the only German magazine for book art and bibliophilia, containing a typographic supplement and a limited, often signed, original graphic for its members. |
