– Background –

Jan Ladislav Dussek was an important Czech composer and pianist who had a significant impact on the music world during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was a pioneer in piano performance, traveling throughout Europe and performing at various courts and concert venues. His technical prowess and ability to extend the size of the pianoforte made him one of the best-regarded pianists in Europe before the rise of Beethoven. Dussek's music is characterized by its lyricism and sudden dynamic contrasts, and some of his forward-looking piano works have traits associated with Romanticism. In addition to his compositions for the piano, Dussek also composed for the harp, and his music for the instrument is considered standard repertoire for all harpists. Despite being less well-known than his contemporaries from the Classical period, Dussek's piano music is highly valued by many.
