– Background –

Josephine Siebe was a German editor and children's book author born on November 10, 1870, in Leipzig, and passed away on July 26, 1941, in the same city. She wrote almost 70 books for children and teenage girls between 1900 and 1940, as well as a variety of contributions to annual and anthology books. She worked for several years as the editor of the women's section of the Leipziger Tageblatt and Reclam's Universum. She gained recognition for her collections of children's stories that took place in villages or small towns, but her most famous work was the seven-book series of Kasperle, which depicted the adventures of a living puppet from a distant world. Her books were translated into several languages and were illustrated by some of the most renowned illustrators of her time.
