– Background –Alfred Louis Meiche was a German historian, ethnographer, and linguist, born on November 24, 1870, in Sebnitz, and died on May 25, 1947, in the same place. He studied at the University of Leipzig, Munich, and Heidelberg, where he received a Ph.D. in 1898, with a thesis on the dialect of Sebnitz. Meiche was a member of many scientific societies and associations, including the Society for Saxon Folklore, the Dresden Historical Society, and the Society of Upper Lusatia, and was one of the founders of the Saxon Homeland Protection Association. He was also the editor of the magazine "Over Mountain and Valley," published by the Mountain Association of the Saxon Switzerland. Meiche was an active scholar who devoted his research to the cultural and regional history of Saxony, especially the Saxon Switzerland, Upper Lusatia, and his hometown Sebnitz. His main work was the historical-topographical description of the Amtshauptmannschaft Pirna. Meiche's research also included the study of place names, family names, and legends. |
