– Background –

Bertha Clément (* 25. August 1852 in Ludwigslust/Mecklenburg; † 22. August 1930 ibid.) was a German writer. She was the daughter of a painter and was strongly influenced in her childhood by her father's descriptions of his travels in southern Europe. She undertook extensive travels herself, then returned to her hometown and began publishing her own narrative works in the 1890s. Bertha Clément was primarily a writer of novels and stories for young people; much of her extensive work is aimed at a bourgeois, female readership and is classified as "Backfischliteratur". While Clément was one of the most read authors in this genre until World War I, she was unable to continue her successes from the imperial era after 1918.
