Karl Friedrich May was a German author who wrote 19th century adventure novels, primarily set in the North American Old West and the Orient and Middle East. He created popular fictional characters such as Winnetou and Old Shatterhand in America and Kara Ben Nemsi and Hadschi Halef Omar in the East. May also wrote novels set in Latin America, China, and Germany, as well as poetry, a play, and music. He is one of the best-selling German writers of all time, with about 200 million copies sold worldwide.
