– Background –

Joseph Meyer (1796–1856) was a German merchant, industrialist, publisher, and founder of the Bibliographisches Institut. He created the "Große Conversations-Lexicon für die gebildeten Stände," which was published from 1840 to 1855 in 52 volumes and is considered a milestone in the history and development of the encyclopedia. Meyer had a progressive philosophical approach to world historical events and emphasized the importance of education for citizens. The encyclopedia was aimed at the progressive bourgeoisie and was an instrument of enlightenment and an attack against the feudal regime. Meyer demanded that his employees write articles in an engaging and informative way and that they be partisan and personally engaged in what was in the people's interest. The encyclopedia was written by 120 authors and contained over 90 million words.
