– Background –

Christian Wolff (1679–1754) was a German philosopher, jurist, and mathematician who played a significant role in the Enlightenment. He was one of the most important philosophers between Leibniz and Kant, and a major proponent of natural law. He is credited with creating the conceptual foundation for 19th-century legal theory and terminology used in everyday language, including consciousness, meaning, attention, and substance. Wolff was also influential in Prussian legislation. He taught at several universities, including Halle and Marburg, and was honored by various European academies. He was exiled from Halle in 1723 and studied Chinese philosophy. He returned to Halle in 1740 and was made a Freiherr in 1745.
