– Background –

Felix Timmermans was a Flemish writer and painter, born in Lier, Belgium, in 1886. Initially, his father intended for him to be his successor in the family lace trade. However, Felix began writing poetry and painting, eventually becoming a prolific author. He struggled with his mental health and studied spirituality and occultism, though he found no solace in these pursuits. He is best known for his novel Pallieter, which was the result of a significant illness. The novel tells the story of a young man's life and the people and landscapes of Flanders. Timmermans also wrote stories based on religious themes, such as Das Jesuskind in Flandern. Timmermans was a sought-after speaker, giving lectures and readings in several cities across Europe. He was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times. Timmermans had a deep faith, which is reflected in his writing, including his final work, Adagio. He passed away in 1947.
