– Background –

Jens Peter Jacobsen was a Danish writer born in Thisted on April 7th, 1847, and died in the same city on April 30th, 1885. He studied botany after graduating and completed his degree with an award-winning dissertation on algae. Jacobsen was a passionate follower of Charles Darwin and translated his work, Origin of Species, into Danish, helping to establish Darwin's ideas in his home country. Based on the theory of evolution, Jacobsen became an atheist after struggling with religious doubts and an unhappy love life. His works are characterized by an impressionistic style of high precision and deep introspection into the human psyche. Jacobsen wrote two novels, several short stories, and poems, most of which were autobiographical and explored the situation of the modern person who must navigate a world without God. His lyrical works were moody, thoughtful, and melancholic and had a profound impact on writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan George, and Thomas Mann. Despite being misunderstood through naturalistic reduction for a century, Jacobsen was an important precursor to German symbolism.
