– Background –

Hans von Volkmann was a German illustrator and landscape painter who belonged to the Düsseldorf School of Art. He was born in Halle in 1860, the son of the surgeon Richard von Volkmann, and spent his youth in his hometown. As a young artist, he began to illustrate Halle and the surrounding areas with pencil and watercolors. His illustrations of Halle became well-known and beloved and were often featured in publications about the town. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1880 to 1888 and became a master student of Gustav Schönleber in Karlsruhe from 1888 to 1892. Volkmann had great success as a landscape painter and became the most prominent representative of the Karlsruhe Landscape School. He died in Halle in 1927 after a short illness. In addition to his work as an artist, he was a member of the German Artists' Association and the Willingshausen Painters' Colony. He is known for his beautiful depictions of historic sites and buildings, particularly those that no longer exist, which have great historical value to art historians and preservationists.
