– Background –

ames Fenimore Cooper was a US writer of the Romantic era, born on September 15, 1789, in Burlington, New Jersey, and died on September 14, 1851, in Cooperstown, New York. He was a key figure in American literature, being the first US writer, along with Washington Irving, to make a living from his books. Cooper was also the most widely read US author in Europe until the early 20th century. He was the first to write historical and sea adventure novels in the US, taking Sir Walter Scott as a model. His extensive work includes numerous historical works, essays, and satires about the US and Europe. Among his most famous works are the five "Leatherstocking" novels, which deal with the exploration of the American West by white scouts, trappers, and settlers, as well as the gradual suppression and destruction of native American people and culture.
