– Background –

Franz Hoffmann (1814–1882) was a German writer, bookseller, and a prolific author of juvenile and popular literature. He initially worked as a clerk for his brother's bookshop in Stuttgart, but later founded his own bookstore in Zurich and Goslar. Hoffmann began his writing career in 1842 with his first juvenile books, which became very popular and led him to focus solely on writing. Despite lacking formal education, he attended lectures in philosophy and natural sciences in Halle and earned a doctorate in philosophy. Over a forty-year literary career, Hoffmann wrote around 250 major and many more minor stories, which were published individually or in collections and periodicals. His works often had a strong moral and religious character, warning against vices such as selfishness and vanity. Despite being criticized by some as having a low literary quality and idealizing reality, Hoffmann's stories were widely read and translated into many modern languages.
