Frederick II, also known as Frederick the Great, was King in Prussia from 1740 to 1772 and King of Prussia from 1772 until his death in 1786. He was a successful military leader who won acclaim for his military victories, re-organized the Prussian Army, and greatly expanded the territories of Prussia, including the First Partition of Poland. He was also a patron of the arts and enlightenment culture, modernized the bureaucracy and civil service, and pursued policies that ranged from tolerance to segregation in religion. Despite being almost certainly homosexual, he is regarded as an outstanding military leader and capable monarch by historians in the 21st century, although his reputation has been subject to shifts over time, including being idolized by the Nazis.
