Johann Gustav Droysen was a prominent German historian and historical theorist who lived from 1808 to 1884. He was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848-1849 and was part of the important constitutional committee. Droysen rose to prominence with his first work "History of Alexander the Great" and elevated the term "Hellenism" to describe the period between Alexander and Cleopatra. He was one of the first historians to argue that the three centuries after Alexander were not a time of decline, but rather a time of development necessary for the rise of Christianity. Later in his career, Droysen focused on modern history and his "History of Prussian Politics" is the most comprehensive account of Prussian-German history. Droysen believed that history had an educational role for the state and rejected the idea of objectivity in history writing. He was a member of several academies and was influential in establishing hermeneutic methodology in modern historical sciences. Droysen's legacy includes his contributions to the critical method of historical research and his influence on his students, including Friedrich Meinecke.
