– Background –

Cornelius Schrevelius was a renowned Dutch classical scholar, born in Haarlem on May 25, 1608, and died in Leiden on September 11, 1661. He received his early education from his father, Theodorus Schrevelius, and later moved with his family to Leiden where he studied medicine and earned a doctorate. After his father's death, Cornelius became the rector of the Latin School in Leiden, where he served until his own passing. Although he was offered several positions as a professor of medicine, he remained devoted to his passion for philology. Schrevelius translated many Greek and Latin texts and published a Greek-Latin dictionary called “Lexicon Manuale Graeco-Latinum et Latino-Graecum” in 1654, which became a standard work and had many editions until the 19th century. His marriage to Theodora van Groenendyck, the daughter of a patrician family, elevated him to the nobility of Leiden.
