– Background –

Eduard Friedrich Mörike was a German pastor, poet, and writer born in Ludwigsburg in 1804. Despite struggling in his studies, he attended the Tübinger Stift to study theology, where he made friends with other writers who would later influence his work. He went on to become a Lutheran pastor and was appointed vicar of Cleversulzbach in 1834 before retiring due to health reasons. He then became a professor of German literature at the Katharinenstift in Stuttgart in 1851, which he held until his retirement in 1866. Mörike was part of the Swabian school of writers and is well known for his poems, some of which were set to music and became folk songs. He also wrote novellas and novels, including "Mozart auf der Reise nach Prag," which is often cited as his finest achievement. His Gesammelte Schriften was published posthumously in 1878, and his work was greatly praised by the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.
