Julius Lohmeyer was a German writer born on October 6th, 1835 in Neisse and passed away on May 24th, 1903 in Charlottenburg. He studied natural sciences and pharmacy in Breslau and eventually became the director of the Königliche Hofapotheke in Elbing. Lohmeyer gained recognition for his patriotic poetry published in the Kladderadatsch magazine and became a permanent staff member until 1873. In 1872, he founded the magazine Die deutsche Jugend, which was endorsed by the Prussian Ministry of Education as valuable for young people. This publication was considered Lohmeyer's greatest accomplishment and set a new standard for children's literature. Despite its popularity, the magazine ceased publication in 1893 due to financial difficulties. Lohmeyer's passion for writing extended beyond his works for young people, as he founded other publications and authored a variety of novels, short stories, and poems. He was also an active member of the Freien Vereinigung für eine starke deutsche Flotte, a group that supported the growth of the German Navy. Lohmeyer's legacy as a children's author and influential figure in German literature is recognized to this day.
