– Background –Jonas Kreppel (December 25, 1874 – July 21, 1940) was an Austrian-Jewish writer, publicist, and official, known for his diverse contributions to Jewish literature and culture. Born in Drohobycz, Galicia (today Ukraine), he grew up in a multilingual environment and learned German, Yiddish, Polish, and Hebrew. After training as a printer, he worked as an editor for the German-language „Drohobyczer Zeitung“, which was printed in Hebrew letters, and wrote for various magazines in Krakow and Lviv, including „Zijon“, „Jüdische Volksstimme“, and „Jerusalem“. Starting in 1904, he edited the Hebrew daily newspaper „Ha Yom“ in Lviv and from 1909 the Yiddish daily „Der Tog“ in Krakow. In 1914, he became a press officer at the Austrian Foreign Ministry and in 1924 at the Federal Chancellery; he also published the weekly „Jüdische Korrespondenz“ from 1915 to 1920. Literarily, Kreppel emerged as a pioneer of the Yiddish crime novel with his series „Max Spitzkopf – the Viennese Sherlock Holmes“ and published East Jewish stories and legends in the 1920s. His main work is the statistical handbook „Jews and Judaism Today“ from 1925; he also contributed to the „Jewish Lexicon“. |
